Whether you agree philosophically with the technology of Genetic Modification or not, the breakthroughs being made in China are if nothing else, completely astounding!!
Within three years, Chinese expect to be selling their human breast milk in supermarkets - the milk comes from genetically modified dairy cows.
By all accounts, the milk produced by these transgenic cows is completely identical to the human variety - it contains the same immune-boosting and antibacterial qualities as breast milk.
Scientists at China's Agricultural University in Beijing have bred the transgenic herd of 300, by inserting human genes into cloned cow embryos, which were then in turn, implanted into surrogate cows.
Although the milk is still undergoing safety tests, the plan is that with government permission, it will be sold to consumers as a more nutritious dairy drink than good old fashioned cows milk.
Some workers at the dairy farm owned by the University, have already tasted the milk. They say that it is sweeter and stronger than the ordinary cow's milk.
Jiang Yao, said, "It's better for you because it's genetically modified."
Professor Li Ning, who is the director of the research project, said that Western concerns about the ethics of genetic modification are "misplaced". He goes on to say, "There are 1.5 billion people in the world who don't get enough to eat... It's our duty to develop science and technology, not to hold it back. We need to feed people first, before we consider ideals and convictions."
